Currently, there are seven public ranges operating throughout the state under the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Hunter Safety Program. Funding for these ranges was provided through the Pittman-Robertson Act (PR). This act levies an excise tax on all sporting arms and ammunition. The money is then divided among the states by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for wildlife restoration, hunter safety training, range construction and maintenance. Four of our ranges are unmanned facilities, open to the public free of charge during daylight hours. The Tenoroc Range and the FWC public range in Pace are maintained by a concessionaire, and a fee is charged. The Pace range is unmanned (no range officer present); the Tenoroc and Indian River County ranges have safety officers on duty during operating hours.
