The Florida Boating Advisory Council held its
semi-annual meeting in Tallahassee April 9. The 18-member council
is made up of representatives from various boating interests and
advises the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
and Department of Community Affairs on boating-related issues.
At the meeting, which was open to the public, the
council covered a variety of topics that affect boating in Florida.
There was discussion on vessel carrying capacities on Florida
waterways, commercial passenger-for-hire requirements, improvements
for public access for recreational boating, vessel insurance and
derelict vessels. FWC Col. Jim Brown, the new chairman, requested
further discussion on the issues.
The council considers issues affecting the boating
community. Most members are appointed by the governor. The Florida
House of Representatives and Florida Senate each have a
representative, as do the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power
Squadrons, Inland Navigation Districts, Department of Environmental
Protection and the FWC.
New members of the council include Sen. Dennis
Jones, Col. Jim Brown, Joe Lewis, Joann Mogle, Jon Netts, Rep.
Jimmy Patronis and April Price.
