The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to
the manatee protection rule for Sarasota County. The hearing will
be March 2 at 6 p.m. in the North County Administration Center's
Board Chambers, 1660 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota.
FWC staff began looking at data and information on
the existing rule in 2008. At the request of the FWC, the Sarasota
County Commission appointed a Local Rule Review Committee in May
2009. That committee met eight times between May and July 2009
before submitting its report to the FWC. At the December 2009 FWC
meeting, FWC Commissioners accepted staff recommendations and
directed staff to move forward with proposed rule changes.
The public hearing in Sarasota will be the first of
two to be held. The second (and final) public hearing will be
conducted by the FWC, most likely at its April Commission meeting
in the Tallahassee area. The FWC will accept written public
comments on the proposed rule through the date of the final public
hearing. Mail comments to Scott Calleson, Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission, Imperiled Species Management Section, 620
South Meridian St., Tallahassee, FL 32399-1600.
