An Old Town child was killed in a hunting incident Nov. 8 on private land near Old Town in Dixie County.

Bryan Austen Osteen (DOB 07/26/99) was deer hunting at the Crane Bay Hunting Club, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators.

Osteen was hunting from an 11-foot ladder stand and was using an H&R single-shot, 20-gauge shotgun. At approximately 5:15 p.m., Osteen suffered a fatal shot to the chest when he was apparently attempting to climb down off the stand.

His grandfather found Osteen lying face-down approximately 14 feet from the base of the stand. A nearby landowner called for emergency services.

FWC officials are continuing the investigation.
