Little Orange Lake’s plant management will be the topic of discussion during the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) meeting scheduled for June 19.

This meeting will be at the Hawthorne Library, 6640 SE 221st St., Hawthorne, from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants may arrive at any time within that timeframe.

The water level of Little Orange Lake has fluctuated greatly in the past 10 years, and plants have grown up in the lake. The FWC has received a lot of questions about managing these plants. There are specific sections in Little Orange Lake where navigation has been impacted.

FWC biologists would like to meet with residents and concerned stakeholders to discuss plant management on this lake and determine what level of management is needed to accomplished the group’s desired goals.

If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to comment about the lake’s plant management, please contact Ryan Hamm at ryan.hamm@myfwc.com or call the FWC’s regional office at 386-758-0525.

FWC Facts:
Black skimmers "skim" the surface of the water with black-tipped, bright red bills that allow the bird to cut through the water and grab small fish near the surface.
