FWC to meet Feb. 4-5 in Jacksonville

The FWC will meet Feb. 4-5 in Jacksonville at the Hyatt Regency, 225 E.Coastline Dr. The sessions start at 8:30 a.m. The public is invited and will be provided opportunities to speak. 

‘Critical Wildlife Area’ signs go up around Bird Island in Martin County

The FWC and Martin County have installed signs around a small island in Martin County, known locally as Bird Island, identifying it as a “Critical Wildlife Area.” The spoil island, also known as MC2, is an important nesting site for a variety of wading birds and one shorebird species.  

Snook reopens in Atlantic state waters

January 28, 2015 

The recreational harvest season for snook reopens on Feb. 1 in Florida’s Atlantic coastal and inland waters (from the Miami-Dade/Monroe county line north), including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. The season will remain open through May 31.

Northern African pythons targeted for removal

This winter, the FWC and partners are continuing increased efforts to locate and remove invasive, nonnative Northern African pythons in south Florida to take advantage of the weather and the snake’s limited distribution. 

FWC to hold public hearings on proposed manatee zones for western Pinellas

The FWC will hold two public hearings Tuesday, Jan. 27, and Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. to gather additional public comment.  

Public meeting set on managing aquatic plant life in Lake Jackson

Hall of Fame bass caps three days of fishing on Rodman Reservoir

January 23, 2015 

Dewight “Richie” Whitmore, 27, from Ringgold, Georgia, caught, documented and released a 14-pound, 1-ounce Florida largemouth bass at Rodman Reservoir on Martin Luther King Day. Whitmore, fishing with Georgia friend Josh Broome and Florida fishing guide Sean Rush, was using live shiners when they laid into the behemoth around 8:30 in the morning.
