The institute recruits primarily scientists and science technicians. To a lesser degree, administrative functions and facility maintenance also require the expertise of qualified administrative, accounting, clerical and maintenance staff.

Career Service, Select Exempt and Senior Management Employment (CS/SES/SMS)
Most state jobs are in the Career Service (CS) pay plan. The Career Service system provides uniform pay, job classification, benefits, and recruitment for the majority of non-management jobs within state agencies. Middle management and some professional positions such as physicians, attorneys, bureau chiefs are included in the Selected Exempt Service (SES). The Senior Management Service (SMS) includes upper management and policy-making positions.  Both the SES and SMS serve "at will."

Other Personal Service Employment
Other-Personal-Services (OPS) employment is an "at will" employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term, temporary or seasonal tasks. Many OPS positions at the institute are supported by grant funding. Although OPS employment does not provide paid leave, retirement or insurance benefits, OPS are covered by worker's compensation and are eligible to participate in the state's Tax Deferred Compensation Program, which is a retirement plan. Additionally, OPS employees, unless exempt, are required to participate in a tax-deferred alternate retirement investment plan which replaces usual social security contributions.
