Ghost Crab Burrow

Ghost Crab Burrow

Ghost crabs can be found on the upper beach and dunes around most of Florida. These animals construct burrows in the sand, sometimes forming complex tunnel systems. Tunnels are almost perfectly round and often are surrounded by a pile of discarded sand near the entrance. Tunnels are normally constructed with two openings, though the first hole (where the crab first began digging the tunnel) maybe filled from the inside once the crab has completed the burrow.

FWC Facts:
Just like fish, blue crabs use gills to breathe. But unlike fish, blue crabs can survive out of water for over 24 hours, as long as their gills are kept moist.
