Ivory-billed Woodpecker
Ivory-billed woodpeckers, pictured above, disappeared from view
in Florida in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Reported sightings
since then consistently have turned out to be similar, but more
abundant, pileated woodpeckers. Unconfirmed
indications ivory-bills still may exist in the Florida Panhandle
have raised new hope the species may not be extinct.
