Loggerhead Digging a Body Pit

One of the first things in the nesting process is digging the body pit. While the front flippers scoop sand to each side, the back flippers make a mound behind the turtle. This clears the loose, dry sand out of the way and makes for easier digging. It also gets the turtle and its egg cavity lower in the ground.
