Cypress
Swamp
Located mainly at the north end of Canoe Slough,
cypress swamps are shallow, forested wetlands with water at or just
below the surface of the ground. They are dominated by bald cypress
and include swamp fern. Cypress swamps are located along streams,
in shallow depressions (called domes or heads), or along shallow
drainage systems (sloughs or strands).
Improved
Pasture
Previous property owners converted large portions
of Spirit of the Wild to pasture for cattle grazing. Areas of
improved pasture are dominated by exotic bahia grass and smutgrass.
Wax myrtle has encroached on most areas of improved pasture.
Freshwater
Marsh
There are scattered wetlands and one main slough
(Canoe Slough) at Spirit-of-the-Wild. Dominant species include
maidencane, pickerelweed, sand cord grass, hydrocotyle, little blue
maidencane, frog-fruit, wax myrtle and arrowhead.
Pine
Flatwoods
Approximately 1300 acres of natural slash pine
flatwoods occur at Spirit-of-the-Wild. Understory species include
runner oak, bushy bluestem, chalky bluestem, creeping bluestem,
wire grass, wax myrtle and saw palmetto.
Mesic
Hammock
Scattered areas of mesic hammock are located
adjacent to Canoe Slough and include live oak, cabbage palm, gumbo
limbo and persimmon.
