Current Actions

The FWC has one active listing action in process for the Panama City crayfish.
At the December 2007 meeting, Commissioners asked FWC staff to review the threatened species listing process in the context of how the FWC manages these species. Specifically, they wanted ideas on overcoming the polarization created by the process and for improving how the FWC conserves and manages Florida's threatened species. The Commission adopted a new management system for conserving threatened species at the September 2010 meeting.
Immediately following the adoption of the new system, the FWC began the process of conducting biological status reviews on the 61 listed species that have not received a review in the past decade. Staff recommendations based on the final biological status review reports were presented to the Commission at the June 2011 meeting in St. Augustine and subsequently approved.
Currently, the FWC is in the process of creating management plans for 60 species and finalizing drafts for two species. While staff and stakeholders work on these management plans over the next two years, listing action requests for additional species are not being accepted.

In 2007, the Commission also deferred the listing action for the Panama City crayfish. Finalization of the Panama City crayfish plan was deferred while the threatened species management system was being developed. The current status of the Panama City crayfish is being reevaluated, and issues relating to its conservation are being resolved. The draft management plan of the Panama City crayfish will be finalized by spring 2013. The draft plan will be posted and public input sought on the draft during fall or winter 2012.
